Retirement Age of Central Government Employees Controversy Begins Again

Retirement Age Controversy Begins Again

“Retirement age for Central Government employees is 60 years now. It was raised to 60 from 58 in 1998 when the then NDA Government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee”

Last year, there were rumours that the centre was planning to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. This time, retirement age makes headlines one again that the superannuation age may be decreased to 58.

Last week the most popular website for CG Employees, www.gservants.com has published an article about the recommendations of 7th CPC, as unconfirmed news. In this, 7th CPC may recommend for reduce in age of retirement of CG Employees will be in two criteria. The retirement age as the completion of 33 years of service, or at the age of 60, whichever comes first. The panic was further increased by similar claims on Facebook and Whatsapp also, because the criteria for retirement as at the age of 58 or completion of 33 years.

If an employee joins central government services at the age of 27, he would complete 33 years of service at the age of 60. If he had joined the services before the age of 27, his position becomes tricky. If someone joins the central government services soon after graduation, at the age of 20, he will be forced to retire at the age of 53.

On the internet, this condition was distorted as 33 years of service or 58 years of age, whichever comes first. This caused great worry to all because the 60/33 rule would affect only those who had joined the service before the age of 26, but the 58/33 rule would lead to all those who had joined after the age of 28 to lose two years of service. Also worth noticing is the fact that the service period is very short in such cases.

Nobody is sure yet if the 7th Pay Commission will include the recommendations on retirement age in its report to the government. But, discussions were held on this issue. There is no information about when the decision will be implemented.

Before May 1998 – 58 Years
After May 1998 – 60 Years
Reducing 60 to 58 is like ‘losing the sword and growing the tail.’

  1. Joining Govt.service at an younger age is not the fault of the person who earned the job by dint of his hard toil and obviously good luck. Every earning member of a family have a plan on how to educate his child, make a shelter for his family members and to make some deposits for his old age requirements. Forceful retirement from service would destroy all these plannings and bring the dependent members on road. If the proposed 33/60 rule as recommended by 7th CPC is accepted by the Govt, a considerable number of families will loss their source of income. We may recall that in the past, a ban on recruitment was imposed. Therefore, a large group of youngsters had lost their opportunity to apply for Central Govt.Services. Privilege of LTC for CG Employees was withheld. Let us wait and see what our luck brings for us.

IN CASE THE RETIREMENT AGE IS 58 YRS OR 33 YRS OF SERVICE, THEN 95% OF EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL COME ON THE ROADS AND BECOMES BEGGARS BECAUSE, THE EMPLOYEE IS TAKEN LOANS FROM BANK SUCH AS HOUSE BUILDINGS AND PERSONNEL AND EDUCATION LOANS FOR HIS CHILDRENS… THE SIN ON THIS ACCOUNT WHO WILL BEAR..7TH PAY COMMISSION MEMBERS OR GOVT. OR ELSE////HENCE WE REQUEST ALL THE HONOURABLE MEMBERS AND GOVT. DO NOT MAKE US BEGGAR OF INDIANS

  3. Dear Sir

Please increase retirement age from 60 to 62 years to ICMR Central Govt. administrative staff, as Scientist are already getting 62 years benefit. We are very few people missing the benefit of 7th pay commission for 2/3 months. Atleast consider for the people retiring within 4 months so that we will be benefitted, last so many years we used to get less salaries hence could not complete financial responsibilities which would be possible with this.

Please put up to consider this seriously.

    Thanking you

  4. 58/33 shall not be encouraged in any point.
Does Narender Modi take the commitment of an employee family so that employee can retire with his wish..
He can implement that for the joines who are joining after 2016 because the joines will have a preplanning accordingly.
How can “Modi” do it for senior employees.. they are so many commitments for each of the employee… like
    1. Some ones daughters marriage
    2. Some ones House loan
    3. Some one has not even has planned yet
    4. Some ones has only dependent on 7th pay Commission to pay his money back to lenders…

Will Narendra modi take all this responsibilities or else he will be the causes of many suicides for their commitments, if he is gonna retire the employees at 33year service.

  5. Dear Sir

Please consider to increase retirement age of gov. Employees from 60 to 62 years atleast those who are working under ICMR as Scientist are already got the benefit of 62 years. There is no harm to give benefit to ICMR administrative staff, after all they are working for scientist only. Also there are many opportunities open to youngsters. As life expentancy has increased and very difficult to cope up with day to day expenses.

Hope all intelligent officers will look into the matter and give some good news of increase of retirement age to 62 years.

  8. If a govermnt servent join g service in age of 20 he became retired in 53 years of age.and found full benefits of retirement which is not bad.so the decision 33/60 by 7th cpc is cor rectangular. But government should decide that they should gives the employment to new generation. Thus in few time our country were free from unemployment which are the biggest problem now days.

  9. Sudden change in the Retirement Age or the length of service to 33 years is not beneifical as it is going to be in a big loss if a person will be retired at 33 years of service.. Suppose if a person started his service at the age of 20 years he will b retired at the age of 53…As everything is done by planned.. Sudden retirement is like a heart attack for the people as they will be facing a huge loss of 7 years of service and min. 35 lakhs if he annual salary is 5 lakhs…Some people might have taken the loans for higher education of their children , for building their house etc… how they will pay their loan amount from their pensions…as their salary ( pension ) goes to 50% ..
Is this the good days for the senior employees who are working for the country…???? It is a heart attack for them….
We accept the thing that their more unemployment , but it doesn’t you spoil the plans of people who have already made when started their service..
We think the Retirement Age thing should be started from 1st jan 2016 for the new joiners and should not be applicable for the present employees..

  10. According to me this dogma of uncertain policy for those central employee working at there young age…..till there fifties just becoz they could live a better life in there later half…out tht policy is simply ignoring the needs of those citizen who hv lived life…on govts faith…morover there r students who have taken loan for studying Engineering or medical fully give our parents as nominee for keeping his /her job as collateral.Yet i do support that there is a huge unemployment yet i think tht this new policy should not unveil so sudden…becoz as i know this wont be entertained calmly and its ok to implement this policy from 2016 but it should not effect the present employee..!!i know sacrifices r needed for betterment of country but this will be a lot more thn tht…i appreciate….wwhatever decision u tk….but think once tht…how many life..will be ruined….who have ruined there for a govt job…..let it be some conclusion tht….may be favourable to all…morover if reducing the retirement wont add up much to the society if ur so called dirty politics nd corruption…is nt iraadicated…u may play with common central govt employee …but u keep on taking bribe…..for u hv things in ur pocket…!!!!ne authority…i seriously claim this policy is just a shit

  11. 58 years’ retirement can only b right decision. It’s not proper to retire someone forcefully at age of 51 or 54 year’s age who joined service at given minimum age limit when his responsibility to kids along with planned emi & insurance policy with retirement age incomplete. They cud have dicided things accordingly if any such idea cud had been in his mind before.

As many employees expressed their views, at present those who are going to retire upto to December 2015 their retirement should increase by two years from 60 to 62 years because atleast they will get 7th pay commission benefits which they are missing for very short period, they can manage their future accordingly, and of course coming years young people will take charge of the same and enthusiastically they will take a nation on the height as other people’s opinion.

  14. I hope this is good move.. But many persons life get affect after this mostly in middle and lower family.
If it is implement then one question raise that central political leaders should also resign their post which comes earlier 30years or 58age.. because if they feel that after 58 their efficiency get decrease then how people believe their efficiency is more to do more ..
So on the account of morality they should take resign from political career.

  15. Many employees after serving reasonable period of service losing the the benefits of 7th pay commission It seems to be best India of extending their service by two years to get enhanced pay and pension..The recruitment process will take time work will not be disturbed and offices will function expeditiously. This can be done as a ONE TIME MEASURE.Nothing will happen to to the economy / to Youth of the country. The process of recruitment can be completed in this period economy will function in right way .and the minority number of employees will benefit. This benefit can be extended to the extended to those retiring from October to Dember 2015 Employees immediately.

The govt can do what ever they want to do.But it should also seen whenever the 50/ 100 percent increase in DA it should be merged with Basic pay so that the increase in allowance will pass on to the employees and the employees when ever they retire they will get benefit accordingly. After serving up to 31/12 2015 Employees are leaving without getting any benefits which is very injustice. The employees who are retiring on 31st Dec 2015 they lost all benefits having done strenuous work with limited staff. This should be kept in view and considerable justice should be done in those specific cases.Thank u Raghu

  17. some of the people have mentioned “it a need of the hour, it will give opportunity to the younger generation to serve the nation” and so on. my question to them is, “genuinely look around yourself. is there dearth of opportunity to serve the nation. have the developed and perfected our selves to that level that there is limited scope of opportunity to serve?” keeping in-capable and lazy aside, there is an endless ocean of opportunity for the capable, passionate and hardworking. take a holistic and selfless view, how much loss to the nation and impact of the economy could this have? rest i still believe our country is in good hands, and the govt and 7th CPC will make a well informed move.

Retirement age of 60 or 58 is ok the concept of 33 years is wrong as if someone joined at an age of 20 would be forced to retire at 51
