Flipkart Discount Sales Controversies: Commerce Minister to Examine
The Ministry of Commerce has assured to look into the complaints from disgruntled buyers who felt cheated by Flipkart’s ‘Big Billion Day’ discount sale campaign.
Flipkart, the online retailer, had, on Monday, announced a massive discount sale and launched a huge advertisement campaign in the media. Fueled by the expectations, many netizens began logging into the site since early in the morning. Due to the heavy traffic, the site crashed.
Wannabe buyers who had selected some items were left with disappointment. Many were greeted by messages like “there is no home delivery in your location”, and “no stock”.
Angry users filed a complaint with the Ministry of Commerce that the website had cheated the consumers by launching such a massive sale with no prior preparations. The complaint also said that websites like these indulge in irresponsible advertising strategies simply with the intention of whipping up public interest.
Meanwhile, Flipkart said that only sales worth Rs. 600 crores were conducted during the ‘Big Billion Day’. It has also expressed its regrets to disappointed consumers.
While talking to the media, the website’s founders, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, said, “The day indeed was a big billion day thanks to the advertisements and media campaign. But it is saddening that we couldn’t meet the customers’ requirements. We express our sincere apologies for having failed to meet the customers’ expectations and for not fulfilling our promises.”
